A Mic of One’s Own

Join us for a new edition of A Mic of One’s Own, a series of collaborations between Kunstinstituut Melly and The Writer’s Guide (to the Galaxy), for an evening of words, stories and performance inspired by Draw Withdraw Redraw.

Drawing can be a way to begin, wander, pause, improvise, resist, reinvent or start over. Our performers have taken the theme wherever the lines led them, and we can’t wait to hear what they’ve created.

DreamRiders

Free Event | 6–9 PM

Through three art workshops, participants explore how personal experiences can be translated into art. Together, they work with conversation, movement, theatre and visual art to create “Droomgereedschap” (Dream Tools), sculptural objects based on their stories and experiences.

Exhibitions

Every Friday, all current exhibitions at Kunstinstituut Melly are open from 6–9 PM, with free admission from 6 PM onwards.

This evening offers the opportunity to explore two exhibitions across the building:

PRISONERS OF LOVE: UNTIL THE SUN OF FREEDOM

Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme compose a poetics of resistance, layering songs, testimonies, and sonic fragments as a means of moving through and unsettling repressive structures.

DRAW WITHDRAW REDRAW

A group exhibition featuring work by AYO, Bani Abidi, Cinthia Marcelle, Felipe Mujica, Misheck Masamvu, Nohemi Perez, and Thierry Oussou. The exhibition foregrounds recognition, resistance, and reinvention, situating us in a state of ongoingness, returning to the same that is never the same. The artists featured in the exhibition use drawing as a way to begin a journey, withdrawing to self-preserve and practice refusal and redraw to begin again, with a refreshed understanding.

The Legendaries

A new work by Cinthia Marcelle, added to Draw Withdraw Redraw. Inspired by a 1942 collective photograph by Hermann Landshoff, the work shifts the focus towards people often missing from official narratives, but whose presence was essential to the construction and continuity of institutions.
