Mijn Klok Staat Still: Embroidery Workshops with Felipe Mujica

Live

In preparation for the upcoming exhibition Draw Withdraw Redraw, participating artist Felipe Mujica will host a two-week embroidery workshop at Kunstinstituut Melly. The workshop is free and open to everyone, no prior experience needed.

Understood as a shared learning experience, the workshop will use fabrics sourced from local textile recycling centers and surplus materials from fabric stores.

Collaboration has always been the core of Felipe Mujica’s ongoing Curtain project (2006–present). Each textile work is created together with people in different places and contexts, drawing on local materials, techniques, and shared knowledge. The curtains respond to their surroundings, they are shaped by the histories and practices, adapting and learning from the context in which it is produced. The workshop is a continuation of the public program Felipe did at Greylight Projects in 2025.

Every textile project begins with a series of drawings based on the same grid. Following a set of rules yet open to variation, these drawings form the starting point of each textile project. In this case, each page combines drawing and collage. For this workshop, participants will work with a selection of these designs, translating them into textiles through patchwork, sewing, and collective embroidery.

The curtains made during the workshop will be exhibited as part of the Draw Withdraw Redraw exhibition at Kunstinstituut Melly, entering into dialogue with the space. Ephemeral and permeable, they invite movement and exchange, while prompting questions around transparency.
