Ima-Abasi Okon
Ima-Abasi Okon is a visual artist based in London and Amsterdam. Okon is interested in language and sound and how meanings are produced; her work in print, sculpture, and film explores variables, and often culminates in complex, layered arrangements which expose cultural structures and identity representation.
Okon graduated from the London College of Communication with a BA in Graphic Media Design Illustration in 2005, followed by an MA in Communication Design from Central Saint Martins College in 2008. In 2018, she participated in the residency programme at Rijksakademie voor beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam. She was awarded both the Nigel Greenwood Research Prize and the Summer Residency at Hospitalfield, Scotland. Her works have been presented at Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, NL; Chisenhale Gallery, London, UK; Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne, UK; Kingsgate Project Space, London, UK; 13th Dak’Art Biennale, Dakar, Senegal; The Showroom, London, UK; and New Art Exchange, Nottingham, UK.
