The Garage School
The Garage School is an informal study program born in Bogota in 2013 that facilitates (un)learning processes using knowledge and tools that are emergent, peripheral or informal. This iteration of the School is made up of Kari Robertson and Santiago Pinyol who live and work in Rotterdam.
Garaje schools emerge like fruiting bodies in relation to a place, subject or host(s): a school in public space to research the commons with grassroots organizations, a fermentation school organised around a lunar cycle, an underground school that made a bar from scratch with soil bricks and DIY wine and spirits. We believe the only thing you need to make a school is another person.
Kari and Santiago have worked together as Garage School of Medicine since 2023, a project that draws from, imagines and prefigures other conceptions of health and healing that are democratic, holistic, preventative, collective and hopeful. Through events and workshops we learn and share skills and practices which support the social body, focus on community care and address threats to collective resilience
They are the curators and facilitators of CLiP#7: The Garage School of Prepping Otherwise at Kunstinstituut Melly. Together with participants and invited guests the school will explore the ideological and practical implications of community preparedness and survival(ism) within increasingly hostile (political, eco-social) contexts.
