TAAL TOUR OP ZUID | Afrikaanderwijk - English
1–2 pm
At Kunstinstituut Melly, we believe in the power of art to make connections and share stories.
During Art Rotterdam and Expo Kaapkwartier, Kunstinstituut Melly invites you to discover Rotterdam from a new perspective. Together with Ontdek Rotterdam Anders we organize several special tours.
Led by art mediator Gino van Weenen, we explore the Afrikaanderwijk through its colonial heritage and hidden stories.
Cihad Caner's solo exhibition sheds light on a forgotten chapter of Dutch history: the 1972 riots in the Afrikaanderwijk, where guest workers were targeted. Parallel to his exhibition, this tour explores the neighborhood's colonial heritage, reflected in street names such as Paul Krugerstraat, Pretorialaan and Wapenstraat, which refer to the Anglo-Boer Wars (1899-1902) and key figures from that period. In addition, the tour shows how these historical events relate to contemporary struggles against gentrification in the neighborhood.
The tours take place in both Dutch and English and end at Het Gemaal op Zuid, where participants are invited to chat with a cup of tea and exchange experiences.
Tickets (10 euros) are available through the link above and include admission to the exhibitions at Kunstinstituut Melly.
