A Mic Of One’s Own
7–9 pm
A new edition of A Mic of One’s Own, in collaboration with The Writer's Guide to the Galaxy
Portrait of a Disco Ball
For this edition we dive nose deep in the power of music, queer music that is! Inspired by Jabu Arnell’s exhibition where he explores disco as a cultural and historical pillar for queer communities. As a herald of Queer, Black, and Hispanic/Latin joy, the music and culture of disco was viewed as a threat to the status quo and pursued with a mixture of fear, excitement, violence, and celebration. For Arnell, the disco ball behaves as a gateway to exploring various phenomena such as vulnerability, beauty, cringe, and glamour.
Performers: we’re looking for you!
We are looking for writers, poets, spoken word artists or songwriters who want to share their thoughts about their ‘disco’ music.* What did music mean to you as a queer baby, in what way does it give you strength, joy, how does it help you release your anger? Your piece can be political, personal, or anything in between! Apply by March 14th through this application form.
Do you simply want to come and listen? Get your free ticket here.
With these sessions we aim to create a safe space for intimate stories to be shared. To ensure that, we expect all participants to respect each other’s privacy and vulnerability.
