Spring Break Activity – Beading Workshop: Zulu Love Letters

Join us at Kunstinstituut Melly this spring break and discover the colorful world of Zulu love letters! In this creative workshop, you’ll learn how to craft your own love message using vibrant beads—drawing inspiration from an age-old Zulu tradition.

In Zulu culture, beads are used to express emotions without words. Each color carries meaning: white symbolizes love and loyalty, red represents passion, and blue stands for hope. By combining different colors and patterns, beaded letters are created, each carrying a hidden message.

Artist Luana Vitra, whose work is currently on view at Kunstinstituut Melly, takes inspiration from the geometric patterns of these beaded letters. In her art, she transforms these forms to explore her vision of the spiritual world. During the workshop, you can follow her approach or experiment with your own shapes and colors!

Date: Wednesday, February 26 – Sunday, March 9 (during opening hours)
Location: Kunstinstituut Melly (The Organ)
For whom? Children aged 7+ (and of course, curious adults!)

Join in! Follow ready-made patterns or design your own unique love letter. This workshop has no set start or end time—you can drop in anytime during opening hours. Please note that participation in this activity does not include access to our exhibitions.

Don’t miss this creative and meaningful workshop!
