A Mic Of One's Own
7 pm
A new edition of A Mic of One's Own, a series of collaborations between Kunstinstituut Melly and The Writer's Guide (to the Galaxy)!
Invisible vs Hypervisible
This edition explores the theme of tensions between what is visible and invisible, drawing inspiration from the work of Liz Johnson Artur in the exhibition Pickup Notes. Liz's cyanotype prints from her Black Balloon Archive suggest tensions between invisibility and hypervisibility of black and brown bodies and their relationship to photographic agency.
Performers: we’re looking for you!
We are looking for writers, poets, spoken word artists or songwriters who want to share their thoughts about this dichotomy. Your piece can be political, personal, or anything in between. Manifestos about (lack of) media representation, poems about the internal struggle of wanting to be seen and the comfort of anonymity, songs about the paradox of social media fame, essays exploring the dichotomy between feeling invisible in a crowded room yet overly exposed online, or perhaps a cheeky limerick about your cat's Instagram account having more followers than you do. Apply by November 22 through this application form.
Date: Friday December 6
Time: 19:00 (doors: 18:30)
Location: Kunstinstituut Melly, Witte de Withstraat 50 Rotterdam
Entrance: free, register here
