FOCUS: Jasmine Thomas-Girvan with Annalee Davis and Holly Bynoe

Live Book Tickets

Join us for an exhibition tour led by artist Jasmine Thomas-Girvan, on the occasion of her first European solo exhibition. On this day, meet us at the exhibition galleries to join the artist in conversation with visiting curators Annalee Davis and Iyawo (Holly Bynoe Young) of Caribbean curatorial agency Sour Grass. During their exhibition walkthrough, they will discuss Thomas-Girvan’s work, contemplating the material traces of Caribbean poetics and ancestry.

This exhibition Bathed in Sacred Fire, includes lyrical figures cast in bronze and silver, as well as natural materials from Caribbean landscapes, such as seeds and gourds, palm fronds and feathers. Her inspirations range from Carnival processions and Junkanoo dances to the literary work of Jamaican Poet Laureate Olive Senior among others.

The exhibition takes place as part of Gatherings and Passages, a new, multi-year collaboration with Sour Grass, the Barbados-based curatorial agency led by Annalee Davis and Iyawo (Holly Bynoe Young). Gatherings and Passages aims to foster a more comprehensive understanding of Caribbean contemporary art and culture. Its activities are also an opportunity to raise awareness about colonial histories, and experiences of post-colonialism and decolonisation.
