Cargotropics: Julieta Aranda

Artist Julieta Aranda lead a small group of invited participants on a boat trip into the harbour of Rotterdam. This excursion was used to incubate a larger research project the artist was developing.

The contrast between the temperate and the tropical is one of the most enduring themes in the history of the Western geographical imagination. Caught between the demands of experience and representation, documentation and fantasy, travelers in the tropics have often treated tropical nature as a foil to the temperate, to all that is civilized, modest, and enlightened. (From the preface to: Felix Driver en Luciana Martins (eds.), Tropical Visions in an Age of Empire, University of Chicago Press, 2005).
